Formula

Finished inches = stitch count × threads spanned ÷ fabric count. Cut size adds the chosen margin to both sides of each dimension.

Worked example

140 × 196 stitches on 14-count Aida

Worked over one square, the finished design is 10 × 14 inches. With a 3-inch margin on every side, cut at least 16 × 20 inches of fabric.

On 18-count Aida, the same chart is about 7.78 × 10.89 inches before margins. A higher count makes the design smaller.
